Class News
** Welcome Back! **
In 3/4JB, we’ve had a fantastic start to Term 3, jumping straight into hands-on learning across all areas. The students have returned refreshed and ready to engage in some exciting new topics! With so many exciting projects underway already, Term 3 is shaping up to be a term full of growth, creativity, and achievement.
Maths
In Maths, we’ve kicked off the term with a focus on financial mathematics and mental maths strategies. Students have been learning how to calculate change using number lines to “count on,” and practising their mental maths skills using fun, interactive online shopping tools. Some groups have taken on a budgeting challenge - designing their dream bedroom while working within a $1000 budget and following a set of criteria. It's been a fun and practical way to apply addition and subtraction skills!

Reading
This term in Reading, we’ve started a novel study of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. We’re already up to Chapter 5 and the students are absolutely hooked! Throughout the term, we’ll continue exploring the story with comprehension activities to help deepen our understanding. If you’d like to follow along at home, each chapter is available on our Google Classroom page.
Wellbeing
Our wellbeing focus for the term is perseverance and building strong problem-solving strategies. This week, students explored the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset. To help build their resilience, they took on the “Perseverance Challenge,” which included tricky activities such as jigsaws, crosswords, word searches, a STEM task and an interactive game. Students were encouraged to stay focused, work through challenges, and practise positive self-talk - a great step toward developing their growth mindset!
Writing
In Writing, we’ve begun our unit on procedural texts. We’ve been exploring how to clearly communicate instructions by looking at the goal, audience, layout, and tone of procedural writing. This week, students planned, drafted, edited, and published their own procedure for making fairy bread. On Thursday, they followed their own instructions to make (and enjoy!) this classic Aussie treat - what a delicious way to start the term!
Term 3 Curriculum Outlines
FJH:
1/2RT:
This term is going to look a little different for the Year One and Two students. After embarking on some new adventures in 2024, we are both very excited to be returning to St Catherine’s to co-teach 1/2RT for the second half of the year.
Hello, my name is Sandra Renehan. I’m thrilled to be teaching the 1/2RT class on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Having been part of the St Catherine’s community in various teaching roles over the past 11 years, I’m excited to return to the classroom after a 6 month break.
It’s a joy to be back doing what I love most - supporting students in their learning across all areas of the curriculum. I look forward to helping your child grow in confidence, rise to challenges, and flourish through meaningful engagement.
Hello, my name is Alana Tavcar. I will be teaching 1/2RT on Wednesdays. After taking a year off to have a baby, I am enthusiastic to come back into the classroom. My favourite subjects are inquiry and mathematics. I am eager to have some fun with the students, introducing lessons with hands-on experiences. I look forward to introducing students to new concepts, where we will be on the journey to investigate and explore together.
Here's to a wonderful term of learning and discovery together!
