Semester One -Student Reports & Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings
Parents will receive semester 1 student reports on the last day of this term, Friday 25 June. Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings will take place at the beginning of term 3, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 July. Students are required to attend these meetings with a parent. The meetings are designed to promote conversation between the student, parents and teacher, allowing students to demonstrate their individual growth and any particular achievements that they are proud of.
The benefits of including students in these meetings are:
- Students are supported to take responsibility for their own learning
- Monitor and share their progress through self and teacher feedback
- Evaluate their progress through teacher directed assessment and self evaluation
- Gives students a chance to show parents direct improvement in their own learning
- Allows parents, students and teachers to celebrate student success together
- Gives students a chance to develop and use real world skills:
- *Self-reflection and evaluation
- *Organisation and communication
- *Self-confidence
A link to book Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings will be published in week 10 newsletter ( Monday 21 June)
When booking times for more than one child, please allow time to move to the next meeting and do not book back to back meeting times.
Program Support Group Meetings
Parents of students who receive additional support for learning will be contacted by Carmel Donlon this week to set up term 2 PSG meetings. To access additional support for students, the school is required to meet more often with parents of students to review personal learning plans and set individual goals for learning support. These meetings will take place via a google meet in the last week of this term.
Student Wellbeing
Whilst out on yard duty last week, it has been so pleasing to see our students socialising, playing and interacting so positively with peers. The staff and I have witnessed first hand students negotiating, solving problems, sharing equipment, cooperating, communicating clearly and using polite words. It is so important for young people to develop skills that help kids to join in conversations, collaborate with peers, develop friendships and self-advocate when they need help. Congratulations to our students for demonstrating these skills!
School Advisory Council
With the change of Governance taking place earlier this year, there are a number of changes taking place for Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The new board of MACS has re-titled school boards to School Advisory Councils. The new terms of references are agreed upon by the parish priest and principal. The MACS board recognises the need of each School Advisory Council to be appropriate in the context of each school. Our school already has an active advisory school board, with structures and guidelines in place. The main changes for our school will be in the name change.
I am grateful for the parents of our current School Advisory Council and their commitment to supporting the school through their attendance at meetings, offering advice, supporting in communication with parents and the parish, along with promoting the school’s vision and strategic intent.
If you would like to know further information about the MACS governance structure you can visit the website below.

School Uniform
Our school advisory council is currently looking at a possible change to some items of our school uniform. We have noted that our school uniform is very similar to Tucker Rd Primary and would like to ensure our school has a point of difference. The school advisory council will be seeking feedback in the near future from parents. We are only at the stage of initial discussions and we will engage in a thorough process of consultation with our school community, including parents, staff and students before any changes are made. The school advisory council will keep you informed.
Church Carpark- drop off and pick up
Parents are reminded that when dropping off or picking up students in the church car park to please ensure you do not park over the yellow walking lane (closest to the school fence). For safety of all, students are asked to exit their vehicle by the car doors closest to the school fence and walk within the yellow lines to the school gate.
If parking in the middle bays of the church car park, parents are asked to get out of their car and come to the school gate to collect their child. The teacher on duty will assist with supervising students to get safely to cars. Students are not to walk to parents cars without an adult supervising.
Just a reminder that there is no parking, no pick up or drop off in front of the priest’s garages.
Thanks for your cooperation.

This term, our Level 5 and 6 students are participating in the Australian Olympic Connect ともだち (Tomodachi) Project. The Japanese word tomodachi means friend. A couple of weeks ago, we were introduced to our ともだち (Tomodachi) school in Japan: Sekiya Elementary School, which is located in Nara - a city near Osaka. Sekiya Elementary School opened in 1971 and has 413 students. We have been working hard between the two schools to find dates and times where we can meet virtually, as our Japanese day and their English day differ.
Last week, we emailed a simple self-introduction in Japanese by following a model we learned in class. In reply, our Level 5 students participated in a cultural exchange via Google Meet this afternoon. Our ともだち (Tomodachi) class, Level 6 - 1 asked each student a question. These were prepared in their English class.
Our next online interaction will be with our Level 6 students and Level 6 - 2 students in Japan, which is planned for Monday 21st June 2021.
We would like to acknowledge Ms Yuka Yuasa and the children at Sekiya Elementary School for their enthusiastic participation in this project, as well as Mrs Carmel Donlon for adjusting our Japanese timetable to accommodate the time difference between the two countries.
Foundation Family Faith Night - Our Prayer Place
Last week the Foundation Families participated in the Family Faith Night. The students came dressed in their warm pajamas along with special members of their family.
Together they shared special items of prayer brought from their homes and participated in guided meditation together. They reflected on the things they are grateful for and listened to the lovely story How Big Is God? read by Mrs Barca.
The students and families reflected on signs and symbols of prayer seen at school. For example, our prayer tables and prayer mats, the cross and candles.
The students were then very busy creating beautiful prayer items to take home for prayer time with their families. The students, families and teachers had a wonderful evening together.
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday the 19th of May the Junior school participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime. Together they listened to the story Give Me Some Space! Written by Philip Bunting.
The Foundation and Year 2 students are loving working together during Term 2 to care for God's creations in our garden. We have planted garlic bulbs and flower seedlings, added more soil to garden beds and watered the gardens during the week. It has been so much fun working together to watch living things grow!
Susan Pattinson
Holt Cross Country
written by Chiara Chiodo
It was the morning of cross country and I was already shaking as Mrs Chiodo and Miss Patto were calling us to get on the bus. I got on the bus with butterflies in my stomach. When we got to Bald Park Hill the nerves grew bigger! We met Miss Armour and set up our marquee.
There were kids from year 4 Zac Forner, Cameron McKell, Lachlan Plas, Jensen Walters and Gus Welsh who were in the 9/10 race. Kids from Year 5, Zara Thompson, Alexander Arnaoutis, Alexander D’Silva, Nathan Anesidis, Miki Nowak and Oliver Todd who were in the 11 race and kids from Year 6 Chiara Chiodo, Sophia Yau, Ramy Khodr, Cohen Walters, Darcy Stevens and Alec Karavias they were in the 12/13 race. The boys and girls were split up into different races.
The worst part was the wait. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the nerves away. When they called us for our race the nerves were bigger than ever. I walked up to the starting line feeling like I was going to explode but luckily I didn't. After the race I felt relieved that I didn't collapse mid way through the race but so tired. There was only one race after my one so I had time to recoup my energy for the presentation. Our school came last but that didn’t matter. We all left feeling so proud of ourselves. We all felt good that we went and we gave it our best shot. It was so fun being there and helping the team.
This term St Catherine’s would like to start Nude Food on Wednesdays every week again. Many families are already packing lunches with minimal extra wrappings. Nude Food is something that everyone can do to make a difference and decrease the amount of waste going into landfill bins. Every piece of packaging or excess food that we can save from landfill will help to make a difference.
What is Nude food?
Nude food is when we avoid single use items and send nothing to landfill.
What does a Nude Food Lunch box look like?
A Nude Food lunch box uses reusable containers and avoids single use wrappers, such as tin foil, ziplock bags, glad wrap and single serve, pre packaged snacks.
Nude food also encourages family to eat healthy as most healthy foods come with their own natural wrapping.
We would love every family to take the challenge and make every Wednesday from this week 26th May a Nude Food day.
Nude food helpful hints:
- Cut up fruit and vegetables and pack them in reusable containers so that children can eat some and save the rest for later. (It’s easier to eat a wedge or two of an apple and then reseal the container than to take a few bites out of a whole apple and save the rest). A rubber band around a sliced apple will prevent browning.
- If your children have chips, savoury biscuits, or other snacks, try buying a larger bulk pack and have your children put the same quantity into a reusable labelled container that they bring home each day. It’s also cheaper!
- Encourage your children to bring home uneaten food to eat later. Appreciate that play time is also important, so discuss with children how much they can reasonably eat in one day. If you’re not sure how much they can eat at school, start small, e.g. a piece of fruit and a sandwich, and build it up if they are asking for more.
Thank you for your support from the Sustainability Leaders and the SRC.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE – OUR WORLD DEPENDS ON IT!
