Student and Staff Absences
Last week we saw a number of students and staff away sick. Thank you to families for keeping your children home if unwell. Our students have demonstrated great resilience as timetables, learning programs and class groupings at times have needed to be modified. Staff are doing the very best they can to minimise disruptions to learning.
If your child has any flu-like symptoms, please ensure they stay at home. It appears that the flu is more prevalent in our school community than COVID at the moment.
Rapid Antigen Test
The school has received another delivery of Rapid Antigen Tests. These will be available for families to pick up after school from outside the school office on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Please continue to test your child, if they are displaying COVID symptoms.
If you are unable to pick up your child RAT’s we will send them home in their school bag.
National Reconciliation Week
Last Friday Mrs Diakrousis and year 3-4 students led a prayer service to mark Sorry Day. We sang the Aborignal Our Father and prayed for creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Foundation Family Faith Night
The Foundation students were very excited on the 18th May to come back to school at night in their pyjamas. The focus for the night was about prayer. We started the evening with meditation and prayer followed by the families listening to a scripture story being told through Godly play. It was wonderful watching the students sharing their special mementos with their friends.
We listened to a lovely story called “How Big is God?” In the story the little boy and his mum talk about all the places we can find God. He decides the best place he finds God is in his heart. 'How Big is God?'
The students worked with their parents to make some items to create a special prayer place at home. They decorated a candle with stickers and colourful tape. Using beautiful stones they created their own crucifix and designed and made their own prayer cloth.
The evening concluded with the students singing for their parents “God Loves Me” by John Burland. Thank you to the families for their participation on the evening. It was lovely to meet face to face and celebrate the students' learning.
Foundation Writing
Over the past few weeks we have been learning about placing a capital letter at the beginning of our sentences and for people’s names. We are learning to put a full stop at the end to show the end of our ideas before starting a new sentence. We have been using little spacemen spacers to help us remember to put a space between our words. We are stretching out the words we want to write and recording the sounds we hear.
The students have loved writing and sharing their recounts with their classmates.

In Grade 1 we have been learning about Narratives by exploring Fairy Tales. We have read Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, The Princess and the Pea and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. When reading, we have explored the structure and language features of narratives. As a small group activity, we used our great imagination to come up with possible characters, settings and plots for our narratives. We worked really well together as a group to share materials and actively listen and respect the opinions and ideas of others.
In Year 2 we have been learning about the structure and language features of non-fiction texts, specifically information reports. Students have followed the process of planning, researching, drafting and editing their own information reports. The students have particularly enjoyed using the iPads to research information about their chosen animals, cars, sports and countries and have shared many interesting facts with the class. We look forward to sharing our published information reports with families soon!
In 3/4JB this week we have been continuing to work on persuasive devices and brainstorming different persuasive topics. We have been spending the week brainstorming ideas on arguments for a Grade 3/4 sleepover, and discussing the different reasons for both sides of the argument. The students have created an abundance of fabulous ideas both for and against this topic.
Persuasive Writing
The students in 3/4MD have been learning about Persuasive Writing.
Persuasive writing is a form of nonfiction writing that encourages careful word choice, the development of logical arguments, and a cohesive summary. Young children can be guided through a series of simple steps in an effort to develop their persuasive writing skills.
Students have learnt to write an introduction, their point of view (argument) and evidence to support their opinion.

The students of 3/4MD were even able to respectfully argue their points about the 3/4 year level having a sleepover, at school.
Last week St Catherine’s hosted a Book fair in the library on Monday to Thursday before and after School. They had lots of books for every age group and lots of awesome stationery at the front desk. There were also some sensational posters! We had many customers from every grade each day. The book fair was an excellent success and we thank everyone who visited and supported our school! I’d also like to thank Elise and Eva, and especially Mrs. Barca for helping me run the book fair because I couldn't do it without them.

Dear Parents and Students,
Choir is BACK! I know there have been lots of students asking when the choir would be returning and they will be happy to know that choir this year will be held at 3:00pm every second Tuesday during term 3 & 4. Choir is for students in Year 2-6. The choir will have opportunities to perform during the year at Masses and other events to be confirmed.
We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about choir, discussing the commitment to learning the songs, attending sessions regularly and being prepared to occasionally attend extra rehearsals at lunchtimes before performances.
We will be meeting during lunchtime at 1:50pm on Tuesday 7th June and Wednesday 8th June for auditions. If your child is interested in becoming a member of the St Catherine’s choir they can collect an information sheet with sign up details for auditions from their classroom teacher. These forms need to be returned to their classroom teacher by Monday 6th June.
We are looking forward to an exciting and musically rewarding second half of the year! Please contact me if you have any questions or queries.
