Rapid Antigen Testing
The Victorian Government will continue to provide rapid antigen tests (RATs) for use by students and staff for the remainder of Term 2.
Schools will continue to be provided with the same weekly quantity of RATs.We will let you know shortly when the next delivery of kits will be available.
However, from Monday 23 May 2022, it is recommended that RATs are used by students and staff when symptomatic. RATs are also required to be used for five days if a student or staff member is a close contact of a confirmed case and they are attending or working at a school.
Thank you to Franklin Gem Shade Sails who have now completed the installation of our new shade sails in the courtyard. We were very excited to receive this grant from the Victorian Government as this has made a huge difference to our courtyard area. Our students will now have a quiet shady area to play in at recess and lunch times.

Year 1 and 2 Family Faith Night
The school disco was held last Friday night and it was a fantastic event for the kids. With a neon and blacklight theme, there were lots of awesome glowing outfits and fabulous face paints! We raised $1610 for the school through ticket sales in the lead up to the event, and through food and fake tattoo sales on the night which is a terrific effort. The committee would like to thank the following people for their help making the night such a success:
Lighting Lab in Box Hill for their generous donation of the disco lights and Mark Banks for his time installing them for us.
Laura Bailey and Paula Hamilton for their help and support of the P&F in getting the event ready.

Reading in Foundation
In FMH we have been learning to point and match word by word when we are reading. The students have enjoyed using googly eye rings and wands to keep their eyes focussed on the words as they read. We have been reading detectives, reading stories and poems to find the rhyming words. We have been learning to read, write, make and say the alphabet identifying the name and sounds each letter makes. As part of our multisensory approach in foundation we have also learnt the signs for each letter using cued articulation.
Over the last two weeks we have been learning about the importance of visualising or making a movie in our minds about what is happening in the story. We listened to short stories and then drew a picture of what we thought had happened. The following pictures were drawn after reading the stories ‘Mike’s Bike’ and ‘Ned’s Bed’.
In Grade 1 we have been doing lots of great learning in reading. We have been revising the short and long vowel sounds and are now learning about the diagraphs, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’, and ‘wh’. Every day we practise reading to ourselves and to a partner. This helps to develop our fluency and confidence. We have been searching for words that include diagraphs at the beginning and end and have been recording our findings in our books. To strengthen and consolidate our knowledge of phonics, we have also been using the ‘Words their Way’ program to do our picture and word sorts.

READING IN THE YEAR 3/4 COHORT
This week in Grade 3 students completed all four NAPLAN assessments. They showed great determination and focus during this week. Well done Grade 3s - we are very proud of you!
In 3/4JB we have been working on building our fluency skills through partner reading. The students have been using a variety of different levelled texts from EPIC, an online program.
We have started working on the reading strategy of ‘summarising’. Being able to summarise is an important skill as we need to be able to identify the main idea of both fictional and nonfiction texts. We have been using the acronym SWBST when reading fictional texts as this acronym, when broken down, helps us find all the details we need to summarise perfectly. Texts we have been summarising either in write form or verbally include fairytales, non fictional text and our reading group books.
In our Reading, we are learning about persuasive devices. We were given persuasive texts and had to read it. We had to find some persuasive devices and highlight them, then write what we found on a piece of A3 paper.
We had to write whether we thought it was persuasive or not. Sophie and I had an advertisement for Nike runners and it had a lot of personal pronouns and facts. We thought that our text could have more modality and opinion.
I liked this activity as it was a poster and we got to present it to the class!! It was fun overall!!!!

Theme: My Environment
The meaning of environment is different for everyone, there’s a myriad of interpretations and ideas that can be explored. Students may choose to focus on ‘My Environment’ from an objective perspective or respond to how their environment makes them feel. Areas of exploration may include landscape, architecture, flora and fauna, the outdoors, indoor spaces, family and community, climate change, self, or an ecosystem. All can be interpreted as linking to ‘My Environment’.

Reminder - How to Use the Bins
Now, we’ve all had our fair share of putting something in the wrong bin by accident. But, this isn’t good! The Sustainability Leaders on Thursday last week had to empty the Recycling bins, but there were banana peels and yoghurt packets! So we need to do something! We talked to the Students of the School after Lunch and discussed the issues with bin sorting. We are here to give a friendly reminder on how to use the bins.
Firstly, the Red bins are for cling wraps, plastic bags and glazed wrappers.
No Paper, Liquids or Cans!
Next is the Recycling bin, or the Yellow One.
It is used for paper, cardboard and empty bottles.
Not Wrappers, Banana Peels and Yoghurt!
And Finally, The Soft plastic Bin. It is for EMPTY food wrappers, plastic bags, and anything plastic that you can scrunch!
No Food, Liquids or Paper.
Thank you For your Time.

World Bee Day is flying our way on May 20
This international day is a great opportunity to help young people learn about the important role bees play in pollinating native plants, keeping the planet happy and healthy, and in helping to ensure food security for our rapidly growing population.
We have a sweet nest of resources for young people in Early Learning to Year 10, overflowing with love for little pollinators.
National Walk Safely to School Day
Now in its 23rd year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 20 May 2022.
The objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:
- To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour
- To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age
- To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians
- To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults
- To promote the use of Public Transport
- To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles
- To reduce the level of traffic congestion
If you can’t walk the entire way to school on this day that’s okay! To participate you could possibly park your car a few blocks away and walk from there. Teachers will hand out official Walk to School Temporary Tattoos on Thursday afternoon.
If you wish for your child to wear the tattoo, please apply it before coming to school.
Happy walking!
